What is FES Cycling?

  • "I have been injured for 22 years following a spinal cord injury at C7. At Neurolink Physiotherapy I have had the opportunity to try several types of FES exercise equipment. In particular the RT200 and RT300 were very beneficial for me and I have been using the RT200 regularly on a long term basis. I ... " feel much fitter as a result. I have also been taught how to use FES to improve and maintain the strength in my weakening hand muscles.

With the FES sessions I am finally having a cardio workout, which is so difficult to achieve post SCI. I feel actively out of breath! My legs are building up muscle too and they look much better, especially when I wear dresses or my favourite skinny jeans."

FES Cycling is far more effective than passive therapy cycling as the movement can be activated by the FES, or a combination of your own control and the FES, in the areas of the movement where you are not able to actively move through.

FES bikes allows you to cycle whilst positioned in your wheelchair or seated in a chair. There are 6 channels to allow stimulation for 6 different muscles. The stimulation is delivered to the nerve and the muscle contraction follows.

Functional electrical stimulation is used to deliver electrical stimulation to the lower motor neurons that connect the spinal cord to your muscles.

This results in a functional patterned movement sequence of your arms if you use the RT300SA or legs if you use the RT300SL or both your arms and legs when using the RT200 Hybrid FES system.

Which bike should I use?

RT300 FES – Leg and Arm Bike

This machine allows you to cycle whilst positioned in your wheelchair or seated in a chair. Or you can strengthen your arms standing up.

There are 6-12 channels to allow stimulation for 6-12 difference muscles groups.

  • The stimulation is delivered to the nerve and the muscle contraction follows.
  • Functional electrical stimulation is used to deliver electrical stimulation to the lower motor neurons that connect the spinal cord to your muscles.
  • This results in a functional patterned movement sequence of your arms and legs when you use the RT300.

When using this elliptical FES bike, stimulation can be delivered to your core muscles as well which are important for a good strong cough, good posture, transfers, balance, and reaching forward out sideways.

The bike can be set up to work your arm or  leg if you have weakness down one side of your body. For this reason, the RT300 is beneficial for use for both wheelchair users and walking clients with muscle weakness and neurological impairments.

The RT-300 offers a leg and/or arm cycle option.

Where you have muscle paralysis, the FES helps to:

  • Maintain and/or increase joint range of motion
  • Aid in the prevention of joint contractures
  • Improve muscle bulk and muscle tone in the muscles stimulated
  • Reduce the risk of developing ischial pressure areas by improving Gluteal muscle bulk
  • Helps to reduce spasms
  • Improve and stimulate circulation through the muscle contractions
  • May promote efficient bowel and bladder function.

Where you have muscle weakness, the FES helps to improve muscle activity and function in weak muscles. FES Elliptical Cycling is far more effective than passive therapy cycling as the movement can be activated by the FES or a combination of your own control and the FES in the areas of the movement where you are not able to actively move through.

  • "I have a spinal cord injury and have been paralysed for ten years. Natalie and her team at Neurolink have been a very positive and encouraging force in my life during many of these difficult years. In addition to our regular physio sessions, Natalie has assisted with wheelchair, cushion and backrest purchases. She has also ... " advised me on other key pieces of equipment that enable me to keep my body active - for example specialised gym equipment and a standing frame. She introduced me to the benefits of FES RT300 leg bike which is an excellent way of keeping my leg muscles exercised and in condition. I had the opportunity to try an exoskeleton at Neurolink and it was fascinating to stand and a walk a few steps with the technology.

I have a regular massage which helps reduce muscle spasm, stiffness and pain.

There is always a positive, welcoming buzz at Neurolink and you feel immediately that the people who work there are dedicated to improving the lives of their clients. Natalie is an expert in her field and she has made a significant change to my life - I honestly cannot imagine how things would have turned out had I not met her."

  • I have used several services (and had contact with several practitioners) at Neurolink (neurophysio, massage, Bioness L300 Plus) but all have stood out for their professionalism, enthusiasm and warmth. Neurolink has helped alleviate many of the symptoms and challenges of living with MS and I look forward to continuing to benefit from their expertise and ... " empathy. I have used and purchased the L300 Plus Bioness system in July 2014. It is very easy to fit for effective daily use and assisting in walking for greater distances, particularly in helping me to overcome foot drop and producing a greater stride when walking outdoors. I am also regularly using the RT300 leg bike to strengthen my legs. This is an enhanced training method and, more importantly, I have found it gives me increased energy. I would certainly recommend the Bioness system and Neurolink Physiotherapy's services to other clients looking to improve their mobility and function.Read more

  • "I have had MS since February 1997 and since I have been attending the clinic I have felt a vast improvement in my mobility and state of mind. As I improve physically, my treatment plan is changed to increase my strength and needs. I was having FES on the RT 200 machine weekly which is ... " like a sitting down cross trainer. Then I purchased a Bioness L300 Plus which I can use every day as it can be worn under my clothes as it is wireless.

This has really helped as I use it when walking but also it has a training setting so while at my desk at work I can switch it on exercise my leg. Now when walking instead of me having to concentrate of the whole of my energy on pulling my right leg along the Bioness L300 Plus system lifts the leg and I can then concentrate on what the rest of my body should be doing when walking.

All the team at Neurolink are very professional and always working out solutions to any obstacles I encounter and the clinic has all the latest equipment. I am very happy that I found them."

  • "My brother suffered a spinal cord injury and after 5 months hospitalisation, was discharged and we found ourselves facing the challenges of a new, different and, at times frightening world as a wheelchair user. Neurolink was a godsend for us and has helped us adjust to that new world. My brother was given a thorough ... " assessment and an individualised programme of physiotherapy including FES bike and standing frame, massage and private training. This treatment given in a non-hospital environment, a supportive, non-patronising, friendly and fun atmosphere was welcome and continues to be of value. In five months, my brother has gained confidence, new skills to manage his disability and an element of improved mobility."Read more
